ISSUES

  • ——
Simply put, we do not have enough housing.

As a city council member I will work to explore creating shovel-ready neighborhoods, to continue using TID/TIF funding to support housing development, and to partner with organizations who will work with families on a path toward homeownership.

    ————

Despite steady and consistent development of singe-family and two-family homes since 2010, there is still a strong demand for all types of housing throughout our community, specifically multi-family housing.

For nearly a decade, no permits to build multi-family housing units were issued. While there has been an increase in new multi-family units since 2019, the supply still does not meet the demand.

To address our housing crisis, I will work to explore the creation shovel-ready, planned neighborhoods, to increase workforce housing options, to continue using TID/TIF revenue for housing, and to partner with non-profits who help create pathways to home ownership.

  • DOWNTOWN

Janesville has a rebounding and thriving downtown with new and established businesses and community spaces. Continued City support and collaboration among business owners and stakeholders is essential to supporting our local economy. By bolstering these relationships, we can continue making Downtown Janesville a welcoming place to meet our neighbors and visitors.

    JOBS

Janesville’s unemployment rate remains low, and we continue to bring in and expand new job opportunities with new and existing employers.

We should continue making Janesville an attractive place for employers and support entrepreneurship through continued use of TIDs/TIFs. According to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Janesville is utilizing only 7.91% of the allowed 12% total municipal equalized value.

    WOODMAN’S SPORTS & CONVENTION CENTER

As work continues on the Woodman’s Sports & Convention Center (WSCC), a more proactive approach to redevelopment of the rest of the property should be taken. Future land use of the the property is zoned for “Planned Mixed-Use”, which allows for a mix of commercial, residential, office, and recreational spaces. Redevelopment would allow for an accessible and walkable neighborhood with housing, shops, a hotel, and green spaces, all while maintaining an economic hub.

  • Janesville has seen growth and many improvements since the 2009 Financial Crisis, however, some of that progress has not been properly balanced. Our neighbors on the South side are resilient, but tired.

    GROCERY STORE

As it stands now, a grocery store is in the works for the South side. As we continue the work to ensure this happens, the City should be proactive with developers to repurpose large, empty parking lots into mixed-use facilities.

    GM/JATCO REDEVELOPMENT

The City is currently taking steps to reacquire the GM and JATCO properties. As this process continues, the city should be proactive in planning what would best complement our community, in collaboration with existing businesses and neighbors.

    MACFARLANE PHEASANTS

Approved for redevelopment in 2022, a new opportunity exists to expand housing and career options. Housing must pair with job growth to establish and expand further investment in our community.
